West Ham's Jarrod Bowen scored the 100th league goal of his career to condemn Ivan Juric to a losing start as Southampton manager.

The Saints made a positive start to Juric's first game since replacing Russell Martin, but were unable to open the scoring.

The Hammers lost defender Max Kilman and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to injury in the first half, and also replaced Carlos Soler with Edson Alvarez at the interval.

And as the intensity promised by Juric dropped, the Hammers pounced to break the deadlock through England forward Bowen, 28.

Tomas Soucek headed Alvarez's cross back across goal and Niclas Fullkrug managed to flick it on for Bowen to poke the ball in from close range.

Southampton rallied, but one goal proved enough to secure West Ham's second win in four games - and make it eight points from the last available 12.

The hosts, meanwhile, remain on six points at the bottom of the Premier League, following their 14th defeat from 18 league games.

West Ham have had to manage without summer g Fullkrug for most of the season, while Michail Antonio's involvement in a car accident means he will be out for a long spell.

The Hammers' injury woes continued as, for the second game running, Julen Lopetegui had to replace one of his centre-backs early on.

Konstantinos Mavropanos came off at half-time of Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Brighton, and although he was able to remain in the starting line-up, this time his defensive partner Kilman had to make way in just the 19th minute.

Fabianski soon followed, with the Poland keeper stretchered off with what appeared to be a head or neck injury.

It happened when Fabianski punched a corner clear before being caught by a late challenge by Nathan Wood, for which the Southampton defender was booked.

Yet the Hammers managed to keep the hosts at bay and actually had the best chance of the first half, with Soler crashing an early effort against the crossbar after Bowen had released full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka down the right.

The introduction of Alvarez helped the visitors regroup, although Guido Rodriguez was shown a straight red card for a sliding challenge but breathed a sigh of relief when it was downgraded to a yellow after the referee checked the pitchside monitor.

Fullkrug was making just his second Premier League start and had a greater impact than last time out against Brighton, claiming an assist.

The Hammers kept the pressure on following a corner and the striker held off his man to flick on for Bowen to score.

This time Fullkrug lasted 68 minutes, another step on the road to recovery, and the Hammers might have made the finish more comfortable as substitute Crysencio Summerville and Mohammed Kudus went close.

While Jurgen Klopp brought in heavy metal football at Liverpool, this could be the beginning of death metal football at Southampton.

Juric was a fan of the music genre during his younger years, and the 49-year-old said this week that he likes his teams to play in a similar style - "work hard, press hard, play good, be intense".

There was a hint of what death metal football might look like when 6ft 7in striker Paul Onuachu was named in Juric's first starting line-up.

The Saints have seldom given the Nigeria striker, 30, a chance to demonstrate his aerial prowess since g him from Genk in February 2023, but he was brought in for his second Premier League start of the season.

And it soon became apparent that Juric's players had been instructed to get the ball wide as soon as possible, with wing-backs Yukinari Sugawara and Kyle Walker-Peters encouraged to push on and get the ball into the box.

That approach almost paid dividends as Walker-Peters kept Sugawara's cross in play for Onuachu to head narrowly wide under pressure from a West Ham defender.

Moments later, midfielder Mateus Fernandes was completely unmarked as he headed an Adam Armstrong cross straight at Fabianski.

Onuachu then had headers kept out by both Fabianski and his replacement Alphonse Areola after crosses into the visitors' box.

The hosts failed to maintain that pressure after the break, though, with Fernandes dragging a shot wide and substitute Tyler Dibling firing over in stoppage time as the Saints suffered a fifth straight home defeat.
