After Birmingham were held to a 1-1 draw at Mansfield at lunchtime, all eyes were on Wrexham to see if they could close the gap.
Well, until 97 minutes in at the Valley they were doing just that, only for the Addicks to convert a penalty which saw the Red Dragons slide to third in the table.
They are now behind Wycombe, who made light work of Leyton Orient at home, while Huddersfield overcame Exeter 2-0 in another big game to move into the top five above resurgent Reading, 1-0 winners over 10-man Bristol Rovers earlier on.
Barnsley won on the road at lowly Shrewsbury to go 7th while Lincoln's eye-catching win over Stockport has them well-placed in 8th.
