Sheffield Wednesday are on 57 points, while Portsmouth are on 53 with one round of Championship remaining
Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth shared the spoils at Hillsborough with a 1-1 stalemate.
The Owls took the lead within 10 minutes as Calum Paterson thumped in from close range for his eighth goal of the season.
Portsmouth winger Josh Murphy then fizzed in a cross for the onrushing Harvey Blair to score a first-half equaliser, but neither side could find a winner.
Both clubs beforehand were already guaranteed to play another season in the Championship with Wednesday now in 12th after gaining a point and Portsmouth in 16th.
Elsewhere in the Championship clubs are either fighting to stay in the division or get out of it through promotion.
But neither Danny Rohl nor John Mousinho would have needed to produce a stirring, inspirational team talk before their sides walked out with Sheffield Wednesday stuck in mid table whilst Portsmouth confirmed their survival in the second tier of English football last week with a 1-0 win against Watford.
It created a bit of an anti-climatic feel in South Yorkshire, with the most notable thing in the build-up being protests from some home fans against the attending Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri.
Still, there were goals, and a relatively positive performance from the Owls in front of some of their disgruntled fans.
Right-back Paterson grabbed his eighth goal of the season when he struck in the opener off the upside off the crossbar thanks to ex-Southampton playmaker Stuart Armstrong's delivery in the ninth minute.
Pompey responded in similar fashion 14 minutes later, as Josh Murphy, the twin brother of Newcastle United winger Jacob, collected the ball from Isaac Hayden and worked his way up the left wing before driving in a low cross for the poorly marked Blair to tap in.
The game petered out as it wore on, but much-needed substitutions for both sides brought about an added touch of attacking vigour as Anthony Musaba, on for Owls forward Djeidi Gassama, created a couple of opportunities for himself.
The Dutchman dribbled through a number of Portsmouth shirts in the 50th minute before firing a long-range effort which was saved by Pompey keeper Ben Kilip, and he was then denied by a goal-saving block from Terry Devlin.
Pompey's introductions of Callum Lang and Marlon Pack gave the visitors some more control, but nothing came of it as Portsmouth collected their 11th draw of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"All in all, I think it's been a very long season with a lot of up and downs. I think this game was mirrored a little bit to the second half of the season where we felt the better team.
"We created more between both boxes. They had one shot on target. We tried a lot but today there's more focus about what we did in the season.
"I think we should be proud about the moment from taking them [Wednesday] from 24th position when I took over to bring them to 12th. I think this is so far an achievement."
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:
"It's a good point. I think it's a very difficult place to come after the elation of last week and the emotion as well.
"I thought the performance in the first half was really pleasing. Second half we sat in a bit deep, we struggled to deal with their good play.
"Ultimately, I look out on to the pitch and I think they've got some very good players at this level, we all know what Barry Bannan can produce on his day and he caused some problems so I'm delighted with the result in the end."
