"The Royal Navy Bomb Squad attended and have transported the device to another location for a controlled explosion to be carried out," it said.

The Royal Navy bomb disposal unit from Devonport were called to the scene.

A Navy spokesperson said the ordinance was believed to have been an old Navy shell.
